Google announces the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)
A payment-agnostic mandate framework meant to sit beside A2A and MCP.
On 16 September 2025 Google Cloud announced AP2, an open protocol developed with payments and technology firms so agents can initiate payments across methods. Google positions AP2 as usable as an extension of A2A and MCP, and as payment-agnostic rather than a stablecoin-only HTTP 402 overlay.
Why it matters
The machine-economy map now has x402, MPP, Visa Intelligent Commerce, Stripe/OpenAI ACP, and Google AP2. Coverage that pretends there is one rail will mislead builders.
