Anthropic open-sources the Model Context Protocol
A standard interface for connecting models to tools, files and business systems.
On 25 November 2024 Anthropic published MCP as an open protocol with SDKs and reference servers. The stated aim was to replace one-off tool integrations with a shared client-server contract. That contract later became the substrate for paid MCP and agent tool marketplaces.
Why it matters
MCP is now the default way many agents discover and call tools. Monetizing those calls is a live commercial question, not a finished standard.
